Why shop total and tool differ
2025-01-08 · updated 2025-01-15
I stood near glass counter in Sikar last week. Uncle was making bill for chain. My phone showed one total. His paper showed another. I felt little silly, but this happen every week to someone.
Tool is not wrong. Shop is not always cheating either. They just count different things. You type rate, grams, making, wastage, GST in gold bill tool. Shop adds stone, polishing line, round off, sometimes old offer code you forgot.
What tool actually adds
GoldOnDesk gold bill is simple box. You put today’s rate per 10 gram. You put net gold grams. You put making percent or making rupees if you know. Wastage if shop said. GST percent if bill shows it. Then total comes.
That total is estimate from your numbers. If you typed making 10 percent and shop charged 14, answer will differ. If you put rate from morning paper and shop uses evening board, again differ. Dont fight phone first. Check what you typed.
I saw one boy in Jaipur type 10 gram rate in per gram box. His tool total went crazy high. Shop uncle laughed soft. Boy fixed it, then numbers came closer. So first check input.
Shop lines you often miss
Many tags show gold value separate. Making separate. Stone weight separate. Hallmark fee small line. Sometimes packing, sometimes insurance for heavy set. Tool on site does not invent those lines. You must add them yourself if shop charges.
Kundan work in Rajasthan has stone and foil. Net gold is less than gross weight. If you put gross in tool, your estimate is high. Shop puts net. Then your phone looks “wrong”. It is not wrong. Weight type is wrong.
Same for diamond touch pieces in city shops. Diamond price sits outside gold making. Our gold bill tool is for gold part plus making plus tax you enter. Not full diamond invoice.
Rate board vs newspaper
Shop rate board can move same day. TV channel shows one city. Your town board is another. Local jeweller also adds small margin on rate sometimes. Tool uses only what you type. So if shop rate is 50 rupees higher per 10 gram, fifteen gram piece already moves few hundred rupees.
I keep small note on phone. Ask uncle, what rate today for 22k per 10 gram. Write that exact number. Then open gold bill. Dont use yesterday WhatsApp forward. That alone fixes half fights.
Making percent tricks
Some shops say making 8 percent. But they take making on gold value after wastage. Some take wastage first, then making on that higher gold. Order changes total. Tool has boxes, you fill as shop explains. If you guess order wrong, total slips.
Making per gram is common on light chains. Percent is common on heavier work. If you mix both styles in one estimate, you double count. I did that once for bangle. Felt angry till I saw my own mistake.
GST and round off
GST on jewellery bill in India is talked a lot. Shop invoice format differs. Some show GST mainly on making side as per their billing software. Some show other breakup. You type percent in tool for rough check. Invoice has official lines. If you type 3 and shop shows different base, totals move.
Round off is small but real. Shop may round to nearest ten or hundred on final. Tool shows exact. People argue for 12 rupees. Not worth blood pressure.
Old gold exchange sitting in same bill
Many “why differ” cases are exchange. You give old earrings. Shop deducts buyback value. New item total looks lower on paper than tool. Tool gold bill is for new purchase side. Exchange needs exchange thinking too. If you ignore credit for old gold, phone total is higher than cash you pay. That is normal.
Hallmark and net weight
HUID piece has stamped weight. Tag may show gross. Ask net gold weight used for value. Put that in tool. If stones are there, remove stone weight. Otherwise tool gold value is fat.
I saw sister buy jhumka. Gross looked 8 gram. Net gold near 6.8 after stone. She typed 8. Difference was big. Shop was fine. Her typing was the gap.
How I use the tool before arguing
I open gold bill outside shop or in corner. I ask three things clear. Today 22k rate per 10g. Net grams for this piece. Making how, percent or per gram, and wastage yes or no. I type only those. I see estimate. Then I look at bill draft. I match line by line. Gold value first. Making second. Tax third. If one line off, I ask that line only. Not whole “your bill wrong” drama.
Voice stay calm. Uncle in small town shop has ego and also honesty mix. Show your screen politely. Say I typed your rate, can you check making line. Many times they correct or explain wastage.
When tool will always be lower or higher
Tool lower: you forgot wastage, forgot hallmark fee, forgot stone, used lower making. Tool higher: you used gross weight, used TV rate higher than shop, typed making twice, put 10g rate in wrong box.
Write your four numbers on paper too. Rate, grams, making, GST. Same four in tool. Then compare.
Festival rush mistake
During wedding season counter is noisy. You hear “making less for you” but bill still old percent. Tool helps you catch that. But you must re-type after final quote. Dont keep morning estimate when evening deal changed.
Also offers like “making half on one item” need manual adjust. Tool dont know offer names. Reduce making percent yourself to match offer, then total makes sense.
Silver and gold mix bills
Some families buy silver payal with gold chain same day. One invoice two metals. Our gold bill is gold side. Silver needs silver bill tool. If you dump all grams in gold tool, nonsense total. Split metals.
What GoldOnDesk is not
Site is not jeweller. Not live rate API. Not court proof. Hallmark and tax invoice win if dispute is legal. Tool is for your brain before you pay.
I tell cousins same thing every Diwali. Use estimate. Ask clear questions. Pay after numbers sit close.
Small checklist I keep
One, rate from this shop today. Two, net gold grams. Three, making method exact words. Four, wastage if any. Five, GST as on draft bill. Six, any old gold credit separate. Seven, stone or kundan extra separate. Type one to five in gold bill. Then see why cash still differs. Usually item six or seven.
Last month my neighbour almost walked out angry. Difference was only stone charges not typed. We added stone as extra making-like amount in mind. Numbers matched. He bought. Shop happy. Phone useful.
So when shop total and tool differ, breath first. Match inputs. Match missing lines. Use gold bill tool as mirror, not as police. Mirror shows your face if you stand straight. Same for bill numbers.
